George Russell Supported by Crash

At the Baku Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz and Sergio Pérez both retired after a crash. George Russell retired, but only narrowly escaped.

Baku (Azerbaijan) – He was the laughing third at the end! The British Formula 1 driver George Russell (26) drove at the Baku Grand Prix On the podium, however, it was based on the fact that two competitors, Carlos Sainz (30) and Sergio Pérez (34), shot each other out of the race. The whole situation was a shock for the Mercedes driver.

With one lap to go, it was clear that Russell would finish in fifth place; the gap to the front was too big.

But then there was a heavy crash between Ferrari driver Sainz and Pérez in the Red Bull in third and fourth place, Russell drove past the destroyed cars of the competition and thus collected the 14th place of his Formula 1 career.

Nevertheless, he was absolutely shocked by what he saw.

“Pure chaos! A shock because I dived blind into this rain of debris, I had no idea where the cars were, I just saw carbon parts flying around. It was really crazy,” said the 26-year-old, according to speedweek.com.

“I'm glad that Checo and Carlos are OK and that I made it out of this mess safely.”

But what actually happened?

On lap 50, Sainz and Pérez had the second Ferrari driver, Charles Leclerc (26), in their sights. However, the attempt to take second place went badly wrong.

Pérez tried to overtake his Spanish rival after turn two, but the latter closed the line. Neither of them gave way until their tires touched and eventually both crashed into the wall.

After the crash, neither of them saw any blame on themselves, Pérez in particular was already ranting like a madman on the radio, while Sainz asked, rather confused, what had actually just happened.

The race stewards also share this view to some extent: they did not blame either driver for the accident, so the investigation was closed and no further action was taken.
