Coventry vs Tottenham Predictions

After a disappointing defeat in the North London derby against a struggling Arsenal on Sunday, Tottenham have taken just four points from their first four Premier League games, so Wednesday night's EFL Cup clash with Coventry should be a welcome distraction for the slow-starting “Lilywhites”.

Ange Postecoglou was optimistic in his interview after the defeat, saying: “In my second year I always win something,” which suggests that his team will not do things by halves at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The Sky Blues will not fear the visit of Spurs, having beaten Wolves 3-2 in the FA Cup last season before coming seconds away from eliminating Manchester United in the semi-finals. However, Mark Robins' side have also had a difficult start to the season and may not have enough potential to keep a motivated Tottenham at bay.

Coventry have only picked up five of their first 15 possible points and their record now stands at three wins in their last 14 games.

That's good news for Spurs, as is the fact that they have won seven of their last nine EFL Cup games against lower-league opponents and could dominate proceedings.

Postecoglou's bold quote suggests that he is taking this competition seriously and may field a strong team.

Djed Spence has been out of favour for some time and does not appear to be in the Australian's plans, meaning Pedro Porro should keep his place at right-back.

The Spaniard has looked lively going forward this season, taking eight shots on goal and scoring one goal in four games, and it is very likely that he will score in this clash.

Porro scored four goals last season against Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United and Burnley (2), so he is clearly good against weaker teams – his goal this season came against newly promoted Leicester. He could also have plenty of chances against Championship Coventry.

Important statistics

Tottenham have won seven of their last nine EFL Cup games against lower-league teams.
