In June 2023, the submersible “Titan” imploded on its way to the wreck of the sunken “Titanic”. All five occupants died. On Monday, the US Coast Guard presented an investigation that should shed light on the matter.

The presentation shows that the crew members of the “Titan” communicated with helpers on board the ship “Polar Prince” via text messages. They exchanged information about the depth and weight of the submersible “Titan”, but shortly afterwards contact was lost. The ship's crew then repeatedly asked whether the “Titan” could still see the “Polar Prince” on the display on board.

A photo was also released showing the destroyed submarine a few days after the implosion. The photo was taken by a remote-controlled underwater vehicle belonging to the company Pelagic Research Services.

The robot discovered the hull stern and other debris four days after the accident. The photo was considered “definitive proof of the catastrophic loss” of the submarine, according to the Coast Guard report.
