Long-dormant shopping center in Henderson finally comes to life

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (FOX5) – A Henderson shopping center that was completed 15 years ago but never occupied, the Monument at Calico Ridge, has become an eyesore on the drive to Lake Las Vegas.

The center was built in 2008. Then came the recession.
Then as a second impetus to open up. Then came Covid.

There has been a big change in the last six months. Under a third owner, the mall is now booming. There are now four (soon to be five) new restaurants, a nail salon, a gym, a family doctor, an orthodontist and an insurance company.

The property is at the center of a real estate boom, with new homes being built daily in Lake Las Vegas to the east and Cadence to the west.

“Everyone in this center is exactly the same. They're locals just trying to bring more business here,” explained Stacy McBride, owner of Two Sisters Broasted Chicken and Ribs. For McBride and her sister, this is a second location across the valley as they set up shop in Sky Canyon.

“We’ve only been open for six weeks, but it’s been phenomenal,” McBride said.

Customers now even come from as far away as Pahrump to eat the typical fried chicken.

“It was scary at first because we thought no one would know we were here, but I'm talking about the day we opened… all it took was one person to spread the word on social media and the word just spread and everyone just came,” McBride said.

“We were always walking around hoping something would be open, so we were really happy when it opened,” says Eva Tovar, who lives nearby.

The PowerSoul Café is now open around the clock with a drive thru and has also quickly gained a loyal fan base.

“I love it. It's so good,” Tovar claimed.

“I feel like I hit the jackpot… There wasn't much out here and so many houses. It wasn't hard for me to figure it out,” explained Dina Mitchell, owner of PowerSoul Cafe.

Since opening in June, Mitchell says sales have been steadily increasing, so much so that there are no longer enough Uber Eats delivery drivers in the area to deliver the orders.

“People are ordering at 10 a.m. … they're ordering at 3 a.m. … I have customers who say every day, 'Thank God you're here,'” Mitchell revealed.

Giuseppe's Italian Bar & Grille, the fifth restaurant in the center, is scheduled to open in late fall. It will also be open 24 hours a day and feature a casino.

There are still some empty shops in the shopping center.
