Indonesians call on University of Pennsylvania to cancel scholarship for Jokowi's daughter-in-law

Some Indonesians have launched a pressure campaign demanding that the University of Pennsylvania cancel a scholarship offered to President Joko Widodo's daughter-in-law over what they say is an “insensitive” stance toward attempts to change the country's electoral law that sparked violent protests.

In July, Erina Gudono said, she received a scholarship for a master's program at the American institution's School of Social Policy and Practice.

Erina thanked her husband Kaesang Pangarep for his “support” in an Instagram post, saying, “Allah is so kind that in one year of marriage he provides for the children's support and goes to college at the same time.”

She added that her parents also moved to Pennsylvania after their wedding in December 2022.

Indonesian social media users called on the university to reconsider its decision and accused Erina of abusing her political connections to take the course.
