Brian O'Driscoll's bold Premiership prediction for Saracens

Brian O'Driscoll's bold Premiership prediction for Saracens

Legendary Irish midfielder Brian O'Driscoll has made a bold prediction about Saracens ahead of the 2024/25 Gallagher Premiership, claiming they will fail to qualify for the semi-finals.

Saracens have won the English championship six times since 2011 and have reached the semi-finals at the end of the season in 13 of the last 15 years. They only missed the final in the 2019/20 season, when they were automatically relegated from the top division due to salary cap breaches and therefore had to spend the 2020/21 season in the Championship.

O'Driscoll's expertise as a TV pundit has in the past been limited to reporting on the Investec Champions Cup, the tournament in which his former club Leinster also takes part.

However, the Irishman has been a regular Premiership reporter for TNT Sports since the start of the year and has made a number of predictions on social media ahead of the start of the new season this weekend.

O'Driscoll's most eye-catching statement came in the old main stand at Leicester's Welford Road when asked about his surprise of the year: “Saracens are not going to make the top four,” he replied.

Mark McCall's team starts the 2024/25 season on Saturday at Gloucester and they will have to adjust to life without former captain Owen Farrell and the Vunipola brothers Mako and Billy, who all now play in the French Top 14 with Racing 92, Vannes and Montpellier respectively.

O'Driscoll was on duty as a pundit last May when Saracens' 2023/24 title challenge ended when the Londoners lost at home to Sale on the final day of the season. That defeat cost them home advantage for the semi-finals and six days later they were sent home after a semi-final defeat at Northampton.

Apart from the season in which they were relegated due to off-field problems and the following year in the English second division, Saracens have reached the semi-finals of the Premiership in each of the last decade and a half.

After finishing ninth under Eddie Jones in 2008/09, Brendan Venter took over and guided them to third place in his only full season. McCall then took over midway through the 2010/11 season and led the club to nine consecutive semi-final appearances before suffering relegation.

Since returning from the Championship in 2021, they have once again established themselves as title contenders, reaching the semi-finals in each of the last three seasons.

O'Driscoll's bold guess that Saracens would not reach the 2024/25 semi-finals was not his only prediction for the new season. “Champions of the Premier League? Quins. Top Premier League try scorer? Joe Cokanasiga. Top Premier League points scorer? AJ MacGinty.”

“Breakthrough player of the season? Henry Pollock of the Northampton Saints. Which new signing is the most exciting? Wow. Maybe Bill Mata. What a new signing. A firework.”
