Seven people injured, some seriously, after accident near Wolfsburg

The happiest day of a couple's life in Lower Saxony was overshadowed by a serious accident. The couple was travelling in a wedding convoy of 50 cars when a serious collision occurred.

According to the Braunschweig police, the accident occurred on Sunday afternoon on the A39 towards Wolfsburg, between the Wolfsburg/Königslutter junction. For reasons that are still unclear, the first vehicle in the wedding convoy of a Turkish-Kurdish wedding party collided with the vehicle of an elderly couple.

Bride and groom unveiled under the last

After the collision, both vehicles skidded, overturned and came to rest on the side of the motorway. As a result of the accident, three people from the wedding party's vehicle were seriously injured and one person was slightly injured. According to media reports, the last person to be injured was the bride and groom, aged 20 and 25. The couple from the second vehicle were also seriously injured. After first responders freed the seven injured people from their vehicles, rescue workers took them to nearby hospitals.

Wedding guests block the road and walk around on the highway

According to the police report, the rescue and recovery measures as well as the accident investigation were significantly hampered by the large number of wedding guests. In total, the wedding convoy consisted of almost 50 vehicles. These either stopped directly behind the accident site, passed the site, turned around in Flechtorf and again stopped on the hard shoulder of the opposite lane. The occupants then left the vehicles to get to the crashed vehicles. In doing so, they are said to have walked across all lanes of the motorway and even climbed over the central barrier.

Police call for reinforcements

The officers of the Braunschweig motorway police therefore had to close the A39 in both directions to avoid any danger to those involved and bystanders. Due to the large number of people, additional patrol cars had to be called in from Braunschweig and Wolfsburg. The members of the wedding party are also said to have behaved in a highly uncooperative manner towards the officers. The police then had to present and enforce a variety of spatial arrangements. Due to the behavior, the police are examining whether proceedings need to be initiated against members of the wedding party.

Accident at the end of a traffic jam leaves people injured

The two vehicles involved in the accident had to be towed away and were secured. The total damage was around 70,000 euros. The A39 was closed towards Wolfsburg until 5:45 p.m. and towards Salzgitter until 4:15 p.m. A secondary accident occurred at the end of the traffic jam towards Wolfsburg, in which one person was slightly injured.
