Teenager arrested after stabbing at Kashechewan First Nation

Police arrested a Kashechewan First Nation teenager over the weekend following a stabbing incident in the Far North Ontario community.

Officers from the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) were dispatched to a residential building on Saturday following a report of an assault.

“When police arrived at the scene, they found an adult female who appeared to have sustained injuries from a recent assault,” a police press release said.

“The victim was transported to the nursing station for further evaluation and treatment of her injuries.”

NAPS officials said the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Through their investigation, officers discovered that a young woman had come into the house that afternoon and confronted the victim.

“During this altercation, the youth is said to have attacked the victim with a knife,” police said.

Later that day, September 14, police were able to locate the suspect and take him into custody “without incident.”

According to police, the victim and the accused know each other.

As a result of the NAPS investigation, a 16-year-old local boy was charged with aggravated assault and dangerous weapon possession.

“The name of the accused will not be disclosed in accordance with the Juvenile Justice Act,” police said.

The defendant was remanded in custody after attending a bail hearing on Sunday.

None of the allegations could be proven in court.
