Police kill three gunmen, thwart attack on division headquarters and seize weapons

The Imo State Police Command has killed three unidentified gunmen who attempted to attack the Njaba Police Headquarters but were repelled by the swift response of the force.

Police seized a general-purpose machine gun, an AK-47 rifle and other items.

A press release by the command's Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, said the force repelled an attack on the divisional headquarters in Njaba on September 15. The attack was carried out by hoodlums suspected of being linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their armed militia, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

The press release said the attackers arrived in three SUVs and cars and launched a brutal attack on the headquarters, firing isolated shots.

In response, the agents quickly took defensive positions and engaged the attackers, neutralizing three attackers.

The press release further stated that the remaining attackers, who sustained various gunshot wounds, fled into nearby bushes, while the commando recovered a multi-purpose machine gun, an AK-47 rifle and three vehicles, including a Toyota Lexus 470, a Mercedes GLK and a Toyota Venza, during the course of the operation.

The command spokesman stated that following this development, an intensive operation is currently underway led by the state Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, to arrest the absconding suspects.
