3 shootings in Des Moines leave 4 dead and 3 injured within 24 hours

Over the past two days, four people have died from gunshot wounds in three separate incidents in Des Moines, one of which injured two police officers.

Two of the shootings mark the ninth, tenth and eleventh homicides in the city in 2024. In the third incident, police shot and killed the suspect after he fired at Des Moines police officers.

Two police officers were injured and a suspect was killed in a shooting in Des Moines early Monday morning.

Des Moines police officers attempted to stop a car near the 2500 block of Easton Boulevard around 1:40 a.m. Monday. The driver failed to stop, and a chase began.

The suspect then crashed near the intersection of East 24th Street and Easton Boulevard. While officers attempted to arrest the suspect, police say he fired a handgun at officers. Several officers returned fire, killing the suspect.

The two Des Moines Police Department officers who were shot were taken to a nearby hospital. They are expected to survive their gunshot wounds, officials said.

This is the second time in 2024 that police officers in Des Moines have been injured by gunfire. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has been asked to assist in the investigation of both incidents.

One dead after suspected shooting at a gas station in Des Moines on Sunday

Des Moines police and fire departments responded to a crash with injuries on Second Avenue and University Avenue at 5:29 a.m. Sunday.

A single vehicle crashed into a retaining wall at the southwest corner of the intersection, police said. Emergency responders discovered a 24-year-old man with a gunshot wound. Paramedics took him to a local hospital, where he died.

DMPD believes the man was fatally injured in a shooting at a local gas station. Police are investigating a crime scene in the parking lot of an Amoco gas station at 1443 Second Ave. During the preliminary investigation, police determined an injured man was attempting to drive away from the scene when he crashed. The incident remains under investigation by detectives with the Des Moines Police Department.

This is DMPD's third homicide investigation since Sunday, following two unrelated murders in the Court Avenue Entertainment District.

Shooting on Court Avenue leaves two dead and one injured

Two men were killed in a violent altercation around 2 a.m. Sunday near the Court Avenue entertainment district. Authorities are classifying the shooting as a double homicide after a second person involved died of their injuries Sunday afternoon. The 29-year-old and the 34-year-old are responsible for the ninth and eleventh homicides in the city this year. The tenth homicide was recorded Sunday morning in another shooting on University Avenue.

A third person also suffered a gunshot wound in the shooting. According to the Des Moines Register, the three people got into a verbal argument before shots were fired. Des Moines police said they recovered three firearms at the scene. Authorities have not yet identified the dead man and police said they are not pursuing any other suspects.
