Strong increase for “WSMDS”, “WWM” loses market share slightly

The final weighted ratings including live streams and delayed viewing for the first week of September are now available – and with the return of the “heute-show” from the summer break, the usual frontrunner is back in terms of subsequent increases. The reach of the “heute-show” subsequently increased by 780,000 to 3.63 million – that's an increase of a whopping 27 percent. The market share also rose significantly by 3.3 percentage points among the total audience and even 7.3 percentage points among 14 to 49 year olds.

The subsequent increase in market share was even greater for “ZDF Magazin Royale” at 8.2 percentage points, rising to 21.0 percent. Interestingly, by the way, “ZDF Magazin Royale” does not only reveal a linear increase in the lead-up to the “heute-show”. The time-delayed use was also much higher than in the previous week, when the “heute-show” was still on summer break. Back then, the subsequent increase in market share was only 2.8 percentage points. This time, the total reach increased by 340,000 instead of 180,000 a week earlier.

Demand for the British series “Beyond Paradise” also remained remarkably high, as was the case a week earlier. The increases of 430,000 to 440,000 are even higher than in the previous week, when they rose by 310,000 and 350,000 respectively. ZDF thus takes the first four places in the ranking of the highest increases after the final weighting of the ratings.

Directly behind it is “Who's stealing my show?” The start of the new season was not only successful in terms of linear broadcasting, the total reach also increased significantly by 280,000 to 1.58 million. The market share among 14- to 49-year-olds rose by 2.9 percentage points – and thus more than in any edition of the season since spring. Ultimately, it was now enough for 23.9 percent.

If some shows gain a significant market share, others will of course lose in return – namely most shows that are not watched on a time-shift basis but primarily broadcast live. This also seems to apply to the “3 million euro week” as part of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”. Although the total reach here also increased by 50,000 to 90,000 for all four episodes – this was below average compared to the market as a whole. The market share among 14 to 49 year olds subsequently fell by 0.3 to 0.9 percentage points. With market shares between 15.0 and 16.9 percent, the “WWM” event was of course still a complete success.

Final weighted quotes? What is that?

The TV industry looks at the previous day's quotes every morning. However, these are “provisionally weighted data”. Seven days later, these are replaced by final weighted values, which are actually relevant but are hardly noticed. These figures include part of the delayed usage (3 days after TV broadcast). On the other hand, they are based on a somewhat broader basis because by then GfK will have received usage data from other TV households, which will make the projection more accurate. Since the switch to the “moving image market standard” on January 1, 2024, the use of live streams in the media libraries is also included – which is likely to be particularly noticeable in sports broadcasts. However, the time-delayed media library accesses are still not included. By adopting the live stream figures, these final weighted values will now only be published eight days after the broadcast instead of four days as before. Therefore, every Monday we will look at the biggest changes that have occurred in the week before last.
