National Voter Registration Day aims to boost voter turnout in November elections

Tuesday, September 17, is National Voter Registration Day, a nationwide voter registration campaign.

The Tulsa Voter Coalition is helping people research and vote in the upcoming general election.

The coalition is made up of several groups, including Rock the Native Vote, Leadership Tulsa, League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Tulsa and Tulsa Young Professionals.

Jenni Gray of TYPROS said this year they will be working with the University of Tulsa to set up five polling locations on campus from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday to encourage voters to register to vote.

According to the Tulsa County Board of Elections, there were 391,377 registered voters in Tulsa County at the end of August. Gray said the goal is to increase voter turnout in November.

“We're really trying to reach out and engage with younger voters because Oklahoma had the lowest turnout of young voters in the country in the last general election. So we would really try not to win that award this year and we're doing everything we can to change that,” Gray said.

Oct. 11 is the deadline to register in Oklahoma. Gray said the OK Voter Portal is a good place to go for any questions about the election.
