A Russian-guided bomb hit a multi-story apartment building in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, on Sunday, sparking a fire and killing one person and injuring 42, officials said.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said the latest attack showed that Ukraine's Western partners must supply weapons and air defense systems and give permission to fire weapons at targets deep inside Russia to save lives.

Prosecutors in the Kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine said on Telegram that the body of a 94-year-old woman had been recovered from the ninth floor of the building.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said the fire caused by the bomb had been extinguished. He put the number of injured at 42, including three children. Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov had previously said that residents may still be under the rubble.

Syniehubov published photos of severe damage to the top four of the building's five floors, with smoke and fire pouring out of blown-out windows.

In his evening video address, Zelensky said three more guided bombs had hit villages in the Kharkiv region, where population centers near the Russian border are frequently the target of Russian attacks.

Russia did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the incident at the apartment building, but denied intentionally targeting civilians, even though thousands of them have been killed since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
