Update on Bryan Kohberger: Man charged with murder of 4 University of Idaho students, now incarcerated in Boise after trial moved

BOISE, ID — The man accused of stabbing four University of Idaho students to death was booked into a Boise jail where his trial was moved last week, Ada County records showed Sunday.

The Idaho Supreme Court on Thursday postponed the trial of Bryan Kohberger after his defense attorneys argued that extensive media coverage and strong emotions in the Moscow, Idaho, community where the killings took place would make it difficult to find an impartial jury.

Kohberger is charged with four counts of murder in the deaths of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves, who were killed in the early morning hours of November 13, 2022.

When Kohberger was asked to enter a plea last year, he remained silent, prompting a judge to enter a not guilty plea on his behalf.

The new trial site in Boise is about 300 miles (483 kilometers) from Moscow. Prosecutors argued unsuccessfully that they could find impartial jurors in Moscow by providing a large pool to choose from. They also said the move would be inconvenient for victims' families, lawyers and witnesses.

Officials said Kohberger was in the area the night of the murders, his DNA was found at the crime scene, and surveillance video and cellphone data showed Kohberger visited the area at least a dozen times before the murders.

Kohberger's lawyers said in court documents that he was only out for a drive that evening, something he often does to hike, run or look at the moon and stars.

The public prosecutor announced that if Kohberger is convicted, they will seek the death penalty. The trial is scheduled for June 2025.
