John Oliver's speech at the 2024 Emmy Awards was about his deceased dog and his son – so to speak.

Oliver's Last week tonightwon the award for Best Written Variety Series at the 76th Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 15. As Oliver accepted the award, he gave a speech thanking his team and family – but a slip-up drew additional laughs from the audience.

“Thank you,” he began. “Thank you to my collaborators — some of them are here, some of them are in Brooklyn — if they're watching this, I know they're in Brooklyn. I hope you enjoy. I especially want to thank Liz Stanton and Tim Carvell. I want to thank HBO for not canceling us for the last decade. That was never a guarantee. I appreciate that. Please keep going.”

He continued: “I want to thank my wife Kate and our children, my husband – 'husband' – Hudson, his name is Hudson. Ouch. This is going to haunt me.”

Oliver, 47, laughed at himself and dedicated his award to another family member.

“I also want to thank, perhaps sillyly, our dog,” he said. “We had the most amazing dog, and she was at our wedding and got us through a pandemic. She was with us through two pregnancies.”

As he spoke, playoff music played, making the moment reminiscent of a sad dog commercial.

“Perfect choice of music,” he said. “We had to say goodbye to her.”

“Fuck you,” he joked. “I feel like Sarah McLachlan right now.”

Singer Sarah McLachlan starred in a touching commercial for the ASPCA for her hit song “Angel.”

“She was an incredible dog,” Oliver added, despite being led off the stage. “This is for her, this is for all the dogs. All the dogs, you are all very good girls. You are all very good boys. You all deserve a reward. Now play me. Thank you very much.”
