The accused Ajmal had a criminal past; doctor dismissed after incident

Kollam: Giving more details about the man behind the wheel in the Mynagappally hit-and-run case, police on Monday said Ajmal has a criminal past and is accused in several cases, including drug peddling, sandal smuggling and cheating. Sasthamcotta police booked Ajmal for wilful killing in the case.

Meanwhile, doctor Sreekutty, who was dating Ajmal at the time of the incident, has been discharged from the private hospital in Karunagappally where she was working. Police had earlier said that the duo were returning drunk from a party when they hit a scooter and ran over 45-year-old Kunjumol.

In his statement to police, Ajmal said he did not stop the vehicle because he feared that the crowd that had gathered around the car after the accident would attack him.

According to police, Ajmal met Sreekutty in the emergency ward of the hospital where she worked. In her statement to police, Sreekutty said that Ajmal had taken her gold jewellery. Further action will be initiated against the duo once the results of their blood test are out. Ajmal's car was registered in the name of a woman from Edakulangara. According to reports, the insurance policy of the car had expired.

Ajmal was on the run after the incident and was caught in Patharam. Witnesses had earlier stated that Ajmal did not stop the car despite being asked to do so. At around 5.45 pm yesterday, Ajmal rammed the scooter on which Kunjumol and Fousia were travelling. Fearing that people in the area might attack him, Ajmal continued driving and ran over Kunjumol. Though Kunjumol was rushed to hospital, she succumbed to her injuries later in the night. Fousia, who was riding the scooter, also sustained injuries.
