FBI: Trump safe after ‘apparent assassination attempt’ at his golf club

Donald Trump is safe after what law enforcement officials are calling another assassination attempt on the former president.

“The FBI has arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida and is apparently investigating an attempted assassination of former President Trump,” the FBI said in a statement to Scripps News.

A source familiar with the matter told Scripps News that Secret Service agents tackled a suspect with a “long gun” outside the grounds of the Trump International Golf Club. Officials said they recovered an AK-47 rifle with a scope and a suspect who appeared to be hiding in bushes was later arrested by local police.

The Trump campaign team had previously stated that the former president was safe after shots were fired near him.

“Nothing will stop me. I will NEVER SURRENDER,” Trump said in a statement.

Authorities have not said whether the arrested man ever fired any shots or whether the Secret Service fired at the person, who was apparently about 500 yards away.

“The Secret Service did exactly what they were supposed to do. They provided exactly the protection that was needed and their agent did a fantastic job,” said Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.

The White House said both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had been briefed on the incident and were “relieved” to hear Trump was safe.

This came just two months after former President Trump was injured in an attack on a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, that left one rally attendee dead and two others injured.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
