Relegated last season, Birmingham are considered favourites by many to gain promotion to League Two, particularly after investing heavily in strengthening the team in the last transfer window, including the record signing of League One-bound Jay Stansfield. Birmingham have made an excellent start to their first season in the third tier since 1991/92, dropping just two points from four in their opening league games. They drew with Reading in their opening game before winning three straight matches against Wycombe Wanderers, Leyton Orient and Wigan Athletic. In their last league game against Wigan, Alfie May opened the scoring, but a 91st-minute goal from Birmingham's Scott Wright on his debut was enough to seal victory for his team. The team have also played in EFL Trophy play, with Walsall drawing and losing on penalties.

Wrexham are hoping to win promotion after two successive promotions and a return to two-tier football after 42 years. They started the season in superb form, winning four and drawing five league games. Wrexham won at Wycombe Wanderers and played out a goalless draw away at Bolton Wanderers before winning successively against Reading, Peterborough United and Shrewsbury Town. Their most recent EFL Trophy title, a 2-1 win over Salford City, means they are now five games unbeaten.

The two teams go into the game with some injury concerns, meaning both will be missing some of their traditional starting XI players. Birmingham will be without Ethan Laird, Luke Harris, Dion Sanderson, Lee Buchanan and Keshi Anderson, and Wrexham may also be without Anthony Forde and George Evans. George Dobson and Lee are likely to return, though, so the game should go well. Stansfield, who joined the team from Fulham, is likely to be in the team's starting line-up, as is May. Wrexham's Marriott and Palmer are likely to lead the attack, as the Wrexham side cannot be underestimated either. Ultimately, both teams look so good that the game can go either way, and perhaps that's exactly what it will – a draw at St Andrew's. Double back the away team.
