The line between stigmatizing abortion and policing women's bodies is a direct one, with tragic consequences for thousands of women across America who needed emergency abortion services but were turned away by doctors out of fear of prosecution. These horror stories, including women with wanted pregnancies suddenly faced health complications, only underscore the fact that abortion care is an integral part of women's maternal health care. When you marginalize abortion through criminal laws, people who need it but can't access it are “left bleeding in emergency rooms,” warns Dr. Leah Torres, the medical director of WAWC Healthcare. Abortion and health historian Dr. Leslie Reagan points out that abortion procedures are not limited to pregnancies, but are also required in some cases for biopsies, fibroid treatments and other health settings. “Everyone is at risk because this is so essential to normal health care,” she says.
