Attacker bit, hit and strangled former boyfriend for ordering food

A man launched a brutal attack on an old school friend when the friend refused his offer of food.

Mark Maxted had been staying at his former friend's house as a favor when the friend hit the other man.

This happened just seconds after Maxted offered him some food he had bought for the two of them earlier in the day.

When the other man explained to him that he did not want to eat the food he had brought with him, the 54-year-old suddenly reacted aggressively.

Without warning, Maxted lunged at the man and headbutted him, while also delivering a series of punches to the face.

Not satisfied with what he had already done, the attacker began to strangle his victim. When he tried to defend himself, he bit his hand.

And the attack escalated further when Maxted picked up a glass bottle and repeatedly hit the man on the knee and head with it.

The victim, also in his 50s, suffered injuries to his face and knee and required several surgeries for an injury to his hand.

Meanwhile, Maxted fled the scene after the attack on March 27, 2022 in Rainworth, but was caught by police soon after.

After Maxted denied the charge of wounding with intent, he was charged with that offence at Nottingham Crown Court in June 2024.

After the week-long trial, he was found guilty by a jury before returning to the same court for sentencing on Monday (September 9).

Maxted, of HMP Nottingham, was sentenced to eight years in prison, suspended for a further four years.

In addition, an indefinite restraining order was issued against him, prohibiting him from having any further contact with his victim.

Detective Constable Chloe Baugh, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Maxted’s reaction to the smallest perceived insult was breathtakingly excessive.

“After his former friend refused his offer of food, he lunged at the other man, landing a series of punches and a headbutt.

“In the brutal attack that followed, he not only continued to beat his victim, but also bit him, choked him and hit him with a bottle.

“This behavior simply cannot go unpunished and has absolutely no place in our communities.

“Despite mounting evidence against him, Maxted consistently denied doing anything wrong, but was unable to fool the jury at the subsequent trial.

“We are pleased that he is now behind bars for his actions that day.”
