Girl flown to hospital in Pittsburgh after car accident in Charleroi

A child was flown to UPMC Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh after being hit by a car in Charleroi on Saturday afternoon.

Charleroi Fire Department Chief Robert Whiten Jr. said the incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. in the 1200 block of Lincoln Avenue.

“When we arrived at the scene, the small child, believed to be between 1 and 1 ½ years old, was in the back seat of the police car,” said Whiten. “Our fire department paramedics performed life support on the patient until the ambulance arrived.”

Further information on the girl's condition was not available. The accident is still being investigated by the Charleroi Regional Police.

Along with the Charleroi fire department, the Charleroi Regional Police and Rostraver West Newton ambulance were also on site. Whiten said members of several fire departments from the area who live nearby were on site.

“It was a very hectic situation,” Whiten said. “When there's a kid involved, it's always very hectic. The guys were trying everything they could. Equipment was flying out of the truck that I didn't even know we had. Everyone was trying to do something because when there's a kid involved, you don't want to see anything other than what's happening.”
