Murder investigation underway following stabbing in Tower Hamlets

A murder investigation is underway following a stabbing in Tower Hamlets.

Police were called at around 1.17am on Sunday 15 September to reports of a woman suffering stab wounds at an address in Duckett Street, E1.

The London Ambulance Service was also on site, but the woman, probably in her thirties, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Relatives have been informed and will continue to be cared for by specially trained staff.

As part of these investigations, police officers arrested two people.

A 32-year-old woman was arrested shortly afterwards on suspicion of murder. She remains in custody.

A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting a crime and remains in custody.

Acting Detective Chief Inspector Ben Dalloway of the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Command is leading the investigation and said:

“This is a tragic incident in which a young woman has lost her life. The people involved appear to know each other and were present at the address during the course of the evening.

“Although this investigation is still in its early stages, we have already made significant progress and arrested two people. We are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

“Officers will continue to carry out essential work on site and I ask residents to please be patient during this time. I would also ask that anyone who has seen anything or has any information that could help us please contact us.”

Detective Superintendent Mike Cagney, of the Central East Command Unit, which covers Tower Hamlets, said:

“At this very difficult time, my thoughts are with the family of this young woman.

“Following this horrific incident, my officers are working closely with our specialist colleagues to understand exactly what happened.

“Over the coming days, local officers will be out and about in and around Duckett Street to provide the community with some much-needed reassurance, but also to give anyone with concerns or information about this incident the opportunity to speak to us.”

There is still a crime scene at the address and investigations into the circumstances are ongoing.
