How to permanently remove patio moss with common kitchen ingredients

Dirt often accumulates on terraces, but moss in particular is particularly stubborn and tends to spread quickly and overgrow the entire surface.

Moss can cling to porous materials such as stone, brick or concrete and penetrate into tiny crevices, making it difficult to remove despite vigorous scrubbing.

Lenard Nagy of Perfect Clean Cleaning Services explains: “Moss growth on surfaces is a common problem that can cause your concrete to look dirty, dull and unsightly.

“It can also damage your concrete over time by causing cracks and holes, and it poses a safety hazard by making your concrete slippery and causing falls and injuries.”

Fortunately, according to Lenard, there is a remarkably simple and effective way to eliminate this green pest without the need for harsh chemicals or special tools.

Baking soda has been shown to be one of the most effective ways to remove moss from stone surfaces and prevent it from re-forming.

Baking soda quickly draws water out of the moss and kills it. Since moss thrives in acidic environments, the high alkalinity of baking soda regulates the pH of the stone surface, creating conditions unfavorable for moss growth.

Lenard Nagy said: “Baking soda is a common household item that you can use to remove moss from concrete.

“Baking soda is a base that can raise the pH of the moss and kill it…[and it] is also gentle and safe for your concrete and the environment.”

To remove moss from your patio, first sprinkle baking soda generously over the affected areas, making sure the moss is completely covered.

Be careful to keep the baking soda away from plants or grass, as it can dry out and damage organic matter. Although a small amount of baking soda is unlikely to harm your garden, you should avoid this method on windy or rainy days to prevent the baking soda from inadvertently spreading.

After applying the baking soda, allow it to sit for 24 hours. During this time, it will penetrate the moss and cause it to brown as it dries.

After the waiting period, the moss should be completely dry. Sweep the dead moss from the terrace with a broom or a hard brush.

Finally, rinse the patio with a hose or pour a bucket of soapy water over it to wash away any baking soda residue and dead moss. Your patio will be clean and moss-free.
