Sony is showing the PS5 Pro as a console with a variety of power upgrades, now we just have to find out what they do in practice.

It was only a few days ago that the PS5 Pro was announced. But how strong will it be? Sony provided some big numbers, but apart from that only a few examples from first-party exclusives that are already doing very well.

Until the release on November 7, however, it remains mysterious as to the frame rates and resolutions achieved in multiplatform titles, although an insider now claims to have come into possession of benchmark data that paints a fairly accurate and powerful picture of the PS5 Pro.

Higher resolution, stable 60 fps and maximum graphics details

This is what it's about: The leaker Moore's Law is Dead talks in a recent YouTube video about how this is direct insider information from an anonymous developer. The person apparently showed him in a video feed how the studio's game performs.

On one side there is a PS5 dev kit, on the other a PS5 Pro dev kit. And the differences were quite clear in all points:

  • resolution
    • PS5: 1080p to 1600p (dynamic)
    • PS5Pro: 1600p to 2160p (dynamic)
  • Level of detail
  • Frame rate
    • PS5: 60 fps with drops to 45 fps

In the unnamed game, the PS5 Pro produces much sharper images – more than twice the number of pixels. It also has higher graphics settings and eliminates all frame drops.

However, we do not know the conditions under which the demonstration was running, only that Sony's scaling technology PSSR was not active. You can read more about the technology for higher resolutions here:

The person Moore's Law is Dead spoke to apparently still sees scope for fixed 4K and 120 fps, but the team behind the game is currently preparing for a test phase.

The most likely thing is that it won't be long in coming, as the additional power of the PS5 Pro can supposedly be activated with a mouse click. Any optimizations can also be made.

Other important differences to the old PS5

In addition to the benchmark, the insider has probably learned more about the features of the PS5 Pro:

That all sounds like a bit more than just the 45 percent that Mark Cerny talked about, but it could also be that ray tracing was still activated in the PS5 Pro benchmark, meaning there was a boost there thanks to the much better architecture. The engine used could also respond very well to the new RDNA 3 chip and its strengths.

How credible is the leak?

Moore's Law is Dead has occasionally been wrong about AMD in the past, but many of his leaks about the PS5 Pro have turned out to be true. As with all rumors, you should remain skeptical, and in the case of the PS5 Pro, you won't have to wait long for “real” data.

The console will be in stores in less than two months, but by then there will probably already be tests that break down exactly how powerful the console really is.

Would you rather go for the PS5 Pro if the gaming performance exceeds your expectations?
