Springfield police investigation leads to arrest of suspected rapist

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts (WGGB/WSHM) — A Springfield man accused of sexual assault is now in custody.

According to Springfield police, officers spoke with a victim last month who said she was sexually assaulted by a man she did not know.

The victim told investigators that while walking home on State Street, she was approached by an unknown man, later identified as 43-year-old George Riveron.

Officials said Riveron allegedly violently grabbed, threatened and assaulted her. He is also accused of robbing the victim.

On September 9, investigators requested and obtained a warrant for Riveron's arrest. He was taken into custody the next day at his Genesee Street home.

Riveron is accused of the following:

  • Arrest Warrant – Aggravated Rape During the Commission of a Crime
  • Rape – subsequent offence
  • Indecent assault on a person aged 14 or over (2 counts)
  • Bodily harm
  • Threatening to commit a crime
  • Armed robbery
  • Theft under $1,200 (7 counts)
  • Intimidation of a witness

Due to the ongoing investigation, Riveron's booking photo cannot be released at this time.
