Wolves vs Newcastle Predictions

Wolves suffered a humiliating 6-2 defeat to Chelsea in their first Premier League home game of the season and the Wanderers could face another dispiriting afternoon when they return to Molineux on Sunday.

Gary O'Neil's side went into the international break with just one point from their first three games, despite a game against Chelsea, as well as visiting title contenders Arsenal and a resurgent Nottingham Forest, and making a rocky start.

For all their well-known problems, Chelsea were always going to pose a serious threat to Wolves in Wanderers' first home game of the season. But it was the manner of the defeat that particularly worried Wolves. They conceded four goals in the second half and collapsed after the break.

Conceding goals at home has become a common theme for the Wanderers, who have conceded in each of their last seven home league games and last kept a clean sheet at Molineux in February, when Sheffield United scored the league's lowest number of goals last season (35).

Before the international break, Wolves were able to stabilise the situation somewhat with a 2-0 home win against Burnley in the EFL Cup and a point from their away game at Forest thanks to Jean-Ricner Bellegarde's goal of the month.

Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and defender Craig Dawson have come into O'Neil's team and have strengthened the defence somewhat, but it is still difficult to imagine Wolves being able to contain Newcastle's strong attack.

The Magpies have picked up seven points from their first three league games, including home wins over Southampton and Tottenham and a controversial draw at Bournemouth.

The Toons' win against Spurs was largely down to a good counter-attacking performance, led by their attacking trio of Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak and Harvey Barnes. Against Southampton on the first weekend, however, it was persistence that brought them victory, when they were reduced to ten men from the 28th minute after Fabian Schar was sent off.

Schar is available on Sunday and midfielder Sandro Tonali could get a starting place after coming on as a substitute against Tottenham in his first Premier League appearance since the end of his gambling ban.

This should give the visitors some extra defensive strength to complement their attacking prowess and Newcastle look to be in with a good chance of repeating March's 3-0 home win over Wolves in the West Midlands.

Wolves have lost seven of their ten home league games in 2024 and the Magpies could continue their dismal run at Molineux.

Important statistics

Wolves have lost five of their last six Premier League games at Molineux.
