Jurors help arrest man who fled courthouse in handcuffs after hearing guilty verdict

SKOWHEGAN, Maine (AP) — A man convicted of child molestation attempted to flee a Maine courthouse, but two jurors and a detective quickly thwarted the escape attempt.

Nicholas Carter, 31, ran out of the courthouse in Skowhegan in handcuffs on Wednesday after being found guilty of aggravated assault on a 14-month-old child, the Portland Press Herald reported.

A series of videos show Carter running down a courthouse hallway in handcuffs, evading a person who tried to stop him, and then fleeing the courthouse, pursued by several other people.

Another video shows Carter running across a parking lot, eventually tripping and falling in a yard, where he is arrested by two jurors and a detective.

Carter was found guilty after a three-day trial in Somerset County Superior Court.

A verdict in the case of serious bodily harm is expected in the next few weeks.
