Man charged with assault, stabbed by victim in self-defense | Guam News

A man has been charged with assaulting an unknown man at the Micronesia Mall two weeks ago.

Paul Chargualaf Ignacio was charged with assault on Friday following reports of a stabbing at the Micronesia Mall on August 30 at around 9:50 a.m.

Officers from the Guam Police Department arrived at the mall and encountered Ignacio, who stated he had been stabbed by an unknown man with whom he had been arguing. However, according to a complaint filed by a Justice of the Peace in the Superior Court of Guam, a witness told police he saw Ignacio “walk up to a man sitting on a bench and strike him, causing the man to fall to the ground while Ignacio continued to strike him.”

After the altercation, Ignacio left and the man went into the mall before the witness could identify him to police.

A subsequent review of the mall's surveillance footage showed Ignacio hitting the man, who defended himself with a knife.

“(Victim) told police that the altercation with Ignacio began with a verbal argument inside a store. As (victim) was leaving the store, Ignacio followed him outside and then began hitting him with enough force that he fell over. Ignacio continued to hit (victim) until (victim) pulled out a knife and swung it defensively in Ignacio's direction,” the complaint states.

Ignacio was tracked down on Thursday in connection with another incident and taken to the Dededo precinct, where he was questioned and later arrested on suspicion of the August 30 attack.

Drug possession

In July, Ignacio was previously charged with third-degree felony possession of a Schedule II controlled substance after two minors accused Ignacio of drug possession.

According to the complaint, Ignacio, a worker with the Parks and Recreation Department, saw the two minors, a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old, at the Dededo Sports Complex and told them, “This is what I do,” before showing them methamphetamine and marijuana in a small clear plastic bag.

Officers later met with Ignacio, who allegedly admitted to possessing drugs and showed officers he had methamphetamine and marijuana in a plastic bag. Ignacio was then asked if he had any more drugs on him and he said he did before showing officers a glass pipe with residue and a red straw containing a powdery, crystal-like substance, according to court documents.
