Video and photos show gang shooting guns during store robbery and the aftermath of axe attack at the front

Video footage released by West Midlands Police shows two gang members brandishing deadly weapons and firing after getting out of a silver Ford Fiesta on Bertram Road in Smethwick, while another member smashed the facade of a computer shop near City Computers with an axe.

A fourth member, also carrying an axe, entered the building.

One victim was hit in the arm by a bullet and another suffered a neck injury in the attack on January 12 last year around noon.

Photos taken the day after the attack showed broken glass in front of the damaged store.

Jamal Hussain, 22, was identified as the driver of the Fiesta and was sentenced to nine years and two months in prison at Worcester Crown Court on Thursday.

Surveillance footage from the previous day showed the gang scouting the route from their addresses in Walsall to Bertram Road and the surrounding area.

In addition, there were numerous telephone calls within the gang on the morning of the attack.

Hussain fled the country shortly after the incident but was arrested at Birmingham Airport upon his return to the UK in May this year.

Hussain, from Walsall, admitted the charges against him at an earlier hearing and was sentenced to nine years and two months in prison at Worcester Crown Court on September 12.

Four other men from Walsall were also jailed for their involvement in the attack.

Last August, 21-year-old Haider Shabir was sentenced to 14 years in prison, 24-year-old Mohammed Uwais Latif to nine years and ten months in prison, and 26-year-old Mohammed Tayyib Wajid to 21 months in prison.

In April, 21-year-old Ahmed Aumair was sentenced to 12 years and 6 months in prison.

Azeem Hussain, 26, is due to be sentenced later this year.

Detective Inspector Francis Nock, of our Serious Crime Unit, said: “All six men involved in this planned armed attack have been convicted.

“Jamal Hussain was a key figure in this operation and was sentenced to long prison terms as a result.

“This could easily have been a fatal attack, but miraculously the injuries to the two victims were not serious.

“Guns have no place on our streets and we will continue to bring to justice those who believe it is acceptable to use them to bring violence into our communities.”
