Remembering victims of the stabbing at the Indiana Convention Center

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Marion County Coroner's Office on Wednesday identified the man killed at the Indiana Convention Center as 58-year-old Alan Gosnell.

Gosnell was working as a sound and lighting technician when he was stabbed and strangled on the second floor of the convention center.

Mike Burman worked with Gosnell for several years at a company called Markey's, which makes audio and video equipment for events.

“He was a gentle giant,” Burman said. “Very quiet, soft-spoken and would do anything for anyone.”

According to a probable cause document, Brian Fulton stabbed Gosnell and placed an object around his neck.

Andy Mallon, executive director of the Indiana Convention Center, told the Indianapolis City and County Council's Municipal Corporations Committee that police and first responders tried to rescue Gosnell.

“It happened literally within minutes of the call,” Mallon said. “They arrived, discovered Mr. Gosnell and immediately performed CPR, which briefly got his pulse going. He eventually died in hospital.”

Mallon told the committee that the Convention Center recently increased security measures by deploying off-duty Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers and creating checkpoints for the public. He also said security guards are on patrol around the clock.

But after that incident, Mallon told the committee that he would reevaluate security measures at the Convention Center.

The probable cause document states that Fulton told police after the incident: “Yes, I killed him (Gosnell). I didn't kill anyone else, just him. He deserved it.”

Burman said Fulton had no right to take his friend's life.

“From all the reports I've seen, the gentleman has mental health issues, and I can understand that, but this was a man who would give anything to anyone and was a hard worker,” Burman said. “He was at his job, just doing it, taking care of his family, and then this senseless stuff happens.”

Fulton was taken to the Marion County Jail.
