SFPD officers shoot suspected armed man at Powell BART station

Mission Local has learned that three San Francisco police officers shot and killed a possibly armed person at the Powell BART station on Friday morning after chasing him into the station.

Officers at the Tenderloin Station responded to reports of a person with a weapon. Police set up “containment units,” but the suspect eluded them and fled. Officers followed the person on foot to the Powell BART station, where the three officers shot the person.

The person was conscious after the gunshot wound and spoke with paramedics, but his condition is not yet known, according to sources. Witnesses at the scene saw the person being pushed into an ambulance by paramedics.

A police source said the altercation began after a man was discovered sleeping in a car with a gun in his hand. Police approached the vehicle and the man fled, the source said.

A crowd of armed officers gathered outside GNG Liquors on 5th Street between Market and Mission, and a man left the establishment with his hand on his waistband, according to footage posted on Twitter by FriscoLive415.

Police and sheriffs pursued the man with guns drawn toward Market Street and down to the BART station, where several gunshots were heard on recordings. People who had gathered near the cable car terminus ran away.

The police were initially unavailable for comment.
