Man in Florida attacked unconscious woman in ambulance: police

A Florida emergency medical technician is behind bars after he was allegedly caught sexually assaulting an unconscious woman in his care while on the job.

According to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office, 37-year-old James Melady of Daytona Beach was arrested Wednesday.

The charges are the result of an investigation into Melady by the Daytona Beach Police Department's Major Cause Unit, which was looking into separate allegations against the first responder. According to local CW affiliate WJXT, Melady is also alleged to have committed sex offenses in that jurisdiction.

His alleged attack on the woman in Flagler County was discovered during the course of that investigation, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

“[Daytona Beach police] “Police learned that while investigating cases in their jurisdiction against Melady, a video was discovered showing Melady, while on duty and in uniform, harassing an unconscious woman in Flagler County,” the statement said.

Through their cooperation, investigators with the Daytona Police Department and Flagler County identified the alleged victim as a former Flagler Beach resident. It was determined that emergency services were called to her home on October 17, 2021.

“The incident occurred in the patient transport area of a Flagler County Fire Department ambulance while the victim was being transported to a Palm Coast hospital,” the statement said.

A cell phone video “clearly shows the suspect abusing the victim while she was apparently unconscious,” the statement said. “Investigators met the victim, who was completely unaware of the attack by Melady.”

According to the sheriff's office, Melady confessed to the crime.

“Investigators from the Major Case Unit also interviewed Melady, who confessed to his crimes and told investigators he retired from the Flagler County Fire Department earlier this year,” the statement said.

“It is unbelievable to me what this offender did to an unconscious victim in the line of duty when he was supposed to be providing emergency medical care and instead sexually assaulted her,” Volusia County Sheriff Rick Staly said in the statement. “I am grateful that we were able to get him off the streets quickly and into jail where he belongs.”

Authorities believe there may be more victims.

Melady has been charged with sexual battery of a helpless person and video voyeurism. He is being held without bail in the Volusia County Jail.
