Spin-off series are a tried and tested strategy for success in the US series business. What do the makers of the series “Tracker” think about the possibility of starting a spin-off?

CBS has made a name for itself when it comes to spin-offs, both the NCIS universe and the FBI world have long thrilled fans. Only one successful series has taken a different path so far: “Tracker”.

This happened in the first season of the drama series “Tracker”

Midway through the first season of Justin Hartley's series, Sofia Pernas (of Blood & Treasure fame and Hartley's real-life wife) was introduced as Billie Matalon. Six weeks later, Jensen Ackles of Supernatural made his debut as Colter's brother Russell, an Army veteran who works as a civilian contractor for a shady organization called The Horizon Group.

Both guest stars seem well suited to lead a second series set in the Tracker universe, but showrunner Elwood Reid is not convinced that a spin-off would be in the best interest of the series.

That’s why the creators don’t want to launch a “Tracker” spin-off

“It's so funny because all my friends say, 'You have to start thinking about spin-offs,'” the producer tells TVLineAnd yet he keeps coming back to the same argument: “Second seasons are very difficult. I've seen it happen with other series that they are canceled too early and then both series suffer.”

“The show is so unique with Justin at the center that it's really important that we expand the world and the cases and expand what 'Tracker' can do,” Reid argues. “Unlike many other shows – unlike a New York or Chicago police show, where it's always a murder case – I can go to any world. I can go to stock car racing, I can go to Nashville, I can go to any world I want.”

Tracker producer explains when there might be a spin-off

Ken Olin, also an executive producer on the CBS series, agrees, adding, “Elwood and I are pretty happy doing this one show, too.” It's a weird show for a spin-off. But it's also the case that things don't catch on so easily anymore…. I mean, look, Dick Wolf was very successful and all that, but how old are these shows now anyway?”

Reid admits she would tackle a second series “if it made sense and was obvious to us. For now, though, our energy is focused on expanding the existing series. And if we're lucky enough to find another character to franchise, then Ken and I will be first in line.”

The premiere of the second season of “Tracker” will take place on Sunday, October 13th. In Germany, you can watch the series on Disney+.
