HSE accuses SnowDome in Tamworth of health and safety failings following death of Louis Watkiss

Louis from Sutton Coldfield suffered fatal injuries on 24 September 2021 during an evening with friends at a tobogganing party in the ski hall.

Rescue workers rushed to the scene of the accident in the SnowDome, but despite all the efforts of the paramedics, Louis' death was confirmed on the spot.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Louis collided with a snow center employee on the ski slope of the popular attraction.

Today (Friday 13 September) the HSE announced that it is bringing charges against Snowdome Limited, accusing the company of breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

A spokesman said: “Twelve-year-old Louis Watkiss died in an accident at the Snowdome in Tamworth on 24 September 2021.

“Following an initial joint investigation with Staffordshire Police, HSE can now confirm that Snowdome Limited has been charged with breaching Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.

“The case is scheduled for a first hearing at Telford Magistrates Court on 9 October 2024.”

After his death, Louis' family paid tribute to him, saying he was their “love, their pride and joy” and a talented musician with a passion for sports.

They said: “Louis was a son, a brother, a grandson, a cousin and a friend.

“Louis was a hard-working student who enjoyed learning and showed tremendous curiosity about the world around him.

“His passion for music was demonstrated by his involvement in two jazz ensembles, which took him to the 5th degree in saxophone studies at the Royal Academy of Music.

“Louis was a fan of Chelsea FC and English football clubs and followed England's cricket and Birmingham Bears teams. He watched both sports regularly.

“And we cheer for AJ and Tyson Fury in their big heavyweight fights.

“We are so grateful that George had five happy years with his brother and he will cherish the memory of Louis' stoic personality.

“We are eternally grateful for the honor of knowing Louis and the pleasure of raising him.

“With Louis' passing, we want to remind others that his life should be celebrated. Although we will miss him every day, especially his winning smile, Louis will remain in our hearts forever.

“We love Louis very much. Our pride. Our joy. Our love. We miss him so much it hurts.”

At the time of the accident, a Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “Police were called because a child had been seriously injured in the Snow Dome.”

“Officers and ambulances were on site. Unfortunately, Louis succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards.

“Louis' family is being supported by specially trained officers.”

Following the accident, Martin Smith, chairman of the SnowDome, said: “The directors and all staff extend their deepest condolences, prayers and sympathy to you.”

“Directors and staff are deeply shocked by what has happened and our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this terrible time.”
