John Anshus, a former choir teacher at Pius XI High School in Milwaukee, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for sexually abusing a student and exposing his genitals to a child.

Anshus pleaded guilty to both crimes on Wednesday. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison and 18 months of extended probation.

Anshus, 34, of Milwaukee, will also be placed on the state sex offender registry for 15 years, among other terms of extended probation.

What was Anshus convicted of?

According to the indictment, in May 2023, Milwaukee police investigated allegations that Anshus hugged and inappropriately touched female students “for an extended period of time.” According to court documents, he also made comments about female students' bodies and clothing.

Anshus was fired during the investigation, the complaint says.

A student, who was in eleventh grade at the time, reported an incident to police in April 2023. Anshus not only hugged the student but also kissed her on the lips, the student claimed. The student also claimed Anshus performed a sexual act on her and exposed himself while the two were sitting in Anshus' truck after eating lunch together.

A search warrant uncovered months of text messages between Anshus and a student, including nude photos of the student and comments from Anshus saying he wanted the two to have sex when the student turned 18.

The criminal complaint states that after the allegations became known in May 2023, Anshus asked the student to delete all text conversations and use the more private app Signal instead.
