GBV suspect in Helderkruin rejects bail application

Karabo Montsho, the suspect accused of stabbing and setting fire to his ex-girlfriend Amanda Malata in Helderkruin, made his first appearance in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on 9 September.

Montsho was arrested and detained in Orange Farm on September 6.

Although Montsho had the opportunity to apply for bail, he declined and opted to remain in custody. His next court date is scheduled for November 27.

The trial received strong support from the Matholesville community and members of the Gender-Based Violence Brigade, who gathered outside the courthouse to protest and demand justice for the young woman.

It is alleged that on September 5, Montsho went into the 22-year-old's room and a heated argument broke out, which led to Montsho stabbing her and setting her on fire.

Malata was then hospitalized and placed on life support. Unfortunately, she died on September 6th.
