Our Opinion: FBI Failures Must Be Investigated | News, Sports, Jobs

\Reports that the FBI fails to report allegations of child sexual abuse to local and state law enforcement should be deeply concerning.

People should be more than just worried – they should be angry.

In a review prompted by the FBI's mishandling of allegations against former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nasser, the FBI's inspector general found that there was no evidence that the FBI complied with reporting requirements in about 50% of cases. According to an Associated Press report, the FBI forwarded allegations within the 24-hour time limit required by its own policies in about 43% of cases.

“This report makes it clear that the FBI is simply not doing its job,” an attorney for abuse victims told AP.

The lawyer is right. And the American people deserve better.

We hope that the report will be closely examined by lawmakers and White House staff. We also hope that the FBI leaders most responsible for this negligence will be fired and that the FBI will establish clear, transparent metrics for improving its performance.

People who abuse children deserve to go to prison – at the very least. Authorities that fail to conduct the necessary investigations and prosecutions enable evil and heinous behavior, and America's children deserve better.
