Mike McDaniels hairstyle, explained: Why the Dolphins coach changed his look in the offseason

Mike McDaniel's appearance is one of the first things fans notice about him.

The Dolphins' head coach looks anything but like a football coach. His slight frame, neat hair and glasses suggest a high school teacher rather than someone in charge of slamming 300-pound men into each other.

However, McDaniel will be turning to a new look in 2024. The Miami head coach has fully arrived in town, surprising media members and Dolphins fans with his appearance during training camp. His long beard, long, curly hair and designer glasses have held up well in the regular season, and McDaniel has been flaunting his style on the sidelines.

When McDaniel appeared for his first press conference of the 2024 preseason, he certainly received some double looks.

The glasses and beard are nothing new for McDaniel. However, in his first two years as head coach, he always wore neat hair parted on the side. His beard was noticeable, but he kept it neat and clean.

That was thrown out the window this year. McDaniel now has long, curly locks and has left the beard behind, giving him a completely different look than he had earlier in his NFL career.

It is unclear why McDaniel opted for the updated look in 2024. He has not discussed the changes to his hairstyle with anyone, so the reason remains unknown.

Maybe he'll make changes in the hopes that it will translate into different results on the field. The Dolphins went 9-8 in 2022 and 11-6 in 2023 under McDaniel, but both seasons ended with a first-round playoff exit.

McDaniel is also known for his glasses. On normal days when he's not sitting in the sun, the Dolphins head coach can be seen wearing prescription lenses. The frames are larger than most, but they're nothing unusual.

However, when you're working out in Miami, you need a good pair of sunglasses…or several. McDaniel has released several pairs of sunglasses, and none of them lack style.
