However, the identity of the dead man is still unclear, the police told TAG24.

According to the report, the fire brigade was called to the street “An der Schildwache” at around 1:45 a.m. after residents noticed the fire in the ground floor apartment of an apartment building.

On site, rescue workers freed the man, who was unconscious at the time, and took him to a hospital under resuscitation measures. He succumbed to his serious injuries there on Thursday.

The cause of the fire is still unclear. A team from the Cologne Criminal Investigation Department has begun investigations into suspected arson and examined the crime scene that night, with the assistance of a police dog, among other things.

During the investigation, they also discovered two other fire sites near the apartment where the fire occurred: a parked trailer showed traces of fire and the police officers found a burnt piece of paper under a parked car.

It is still unclear whether the three fires are related.
