Three people arrested in connection with the stabbing of former Malaysian GP racer Elly Idzlianizar and a samurai sword confiscated

KANGAR, Sept 12 – Police on Tuesday (Sept 10) arrested three men in connection with a stabbing incident that resulted in the death of 40-year-old former Malaysian GP racer Elly Idzlianizar Elias, who died yesterday morning while receiving treatment at the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital (HTF) here.

Kangar police chief ACP Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said the suspects, aged between 28 and 51, were arrested separately in the Perlis area yesterday. Police also seized a samurai sword measuring about 112 centimetres long with a black handle and black scabbard.

“Police also seized a blue Proton Iriz vehicle with a cracked windshield and visible red stains and markings suspected to be blood.

“The criminal history check of the suspects revealed that they have previous convictions for attempted murder, criminal threat, arson, armed riot, car theft, gambling and drug offences,” he said during a press conference here today.

Regarding the stabbing case, Yusharifuddin said police received information about a brawl that occurred at Taman Behor Gonchar Jaya at 11.13pm on Tuesday and details indicated that the former national racing driver was seriously injured and taken to the HTF by ambulance.

“The victim was taken to hospital and pronounced dead at around 12:01am on September 11. The autopsy conducted at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (Alor Setar, Kedah) revealed that the victim died of severe bleeding caused by multiple stab wounds, with a total of 12 stab wounds,” he said.

He added that the three suspects were believed to be acquaintances of the victim and that the incident was probably the result of a misunderstanding that escalated into a fight and resulted in the victim's death.

“All three suspects have been in custody for seven days since yesterday and the case is being investigated under Article 302 of the Penal Code,” he said.

For the sake of completeness, it should be mentioned that Elly Idzlianizar first made a name for herself in the local Cub Prix racing scene and was also selected to participate in the national wildcard rider program for the Malaysian Grand Prix in 2009. — Bernama
