USC Aiken police respond to 911 call about shots fired

AIKEN, SC (WRDW/WAGT) – On Tuesday morning, USC Aiken Police responded to a 911 call regarding a firearm in the area of ​​the Crossings Apartments.

According to officials, 19-year-old Aylmer Burt Philpot was arrested for possession of a firearm on campus as well as possession of tobacco and cannabis products.

A witness said Monday that he heard a gunshot and saw from his window a truck speeding through the parking lot.

Officers spoke with the victim, who stated that there was a verbal altercation between her and the suspect in the parking lot, which resulted in the suspect firing his weapon.

When questioned, the suspect initially told police that he did not have a weapon and that the backpack, which presumably contained the weapon, did not belong to him.

The police told the suspect that his statement would be confirmed by cameras, whereupon he admitted that the backpack belonged to him.

The backpack was searched by the police and the weapon was found.

According to the report, Philpot is accused of drug possession and carrying or displaying a firearm near a public building.
