One dead in police-involved shooting in Saratoga Springs

A man pointed his gun at police officers in Saratoga, whereupon an officer fired his weapon and killed the man.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (WNYT) – One person is dead in a police-involved shooting in Saratoga Springs.

This began around 4 p.m. on Wednesday when police were searching for a man who was threatening to harm himself. That man, James Dellea, 48, of Hillsdale, was found in the parking lot of the Albany – Saratoga Speedway on State Route 9 in the town of Malta.

“He failed to comply with the lawful order to exit his vehicle and fled the scene of the accident. A low-speed pursuit was initiated,” New York State Police said.

He then led police on a low-speed chase that ended at Bethel Saratoga Church on Route 9.

Dellea refused to leave his car, police said. He then showed a gun and was shot by a police officer.

“Despite numerous requests, Mr. Dellea again refused to exit his vehicle. The police then discovered that Mr. D'Elia was carrying a firearm. Mr. Dellea then brandished the weapon, whereupon one of the police officers fired his weapon, fatally striking him,” police said.

Due to the ongoing investigation, State Route 9 was closed from Old Post Road to East West Road.

NewsChannel 13 spoke with Pastor John Gentile of Bethel Church and he says he feels for everyone involved.

“Someone died in our parking lot, and in horrific conditions. So we just pray. I pray. I prayed for the police officer. I prayed for the family of the deceased. And of course I pray for the community,” Gentile said.

The Attorney General's Office is involved in the investigations required in New York when there is a fatal shooting involving a police officer.

There is currently no danger to the population, police said.
