New London police investigate stabbing at Hodges Square

Sept. 11—NEW LONDON—Police are investigating the stabbing attack of a man who witnesses said collapsed on a sidewalk in front of several businesses in Hodges Square Wednesday afternoon.

The stabbing was reported around 12:20 p.m. When police and firefighters arrived, they found the man face down near 393 Williams St. in front of the Hodges Square Wine & Spirits store, on the corner of State Pier Road.

Police cordoned off a portion of the sidewalk where the man was found with yellow crime scene tape. They could also be seen cordoning off an area across the street under the Interstate 95 overpass where a small homeless encampment is located. Officers walked around a tent where some witnesses said the stabbing victim was living.

“It's sad,” said Betty Wise, a local resident. “I'm holding back tears and I don't even know who he was.”

Wise said there are numerous homeless encampments in the area and that she often cooks and delivers meals to those in need.

“I just pray he’s OK,” Wise said.

The police initially did not provide any information about the man’s condition.
