Terrible news for the Jacksonville Jaguars' opponent in Week 2

Terrible news for the Jacksonville Jaguars' opponent in Week 2

The Jacksonville Jaguars prepare to face the Cleveland Browns, who are a far cry from last season's playoff team. The Browns suffered a loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1.

The news they received on Tuesday is certainly even worse. Quarterback Deshaun Watson is facing a civil lawsuit over an alleged sexual assault in 2020, the Associated Press reports.

“On Monday, a woman in Texas accused Watson of sexually assaulting her during an incident in her apartment four years ago. She claims Watson sexually forced himself on her for several minutes. She is seeking $1 million in damages, according to the lawsuit,” the AP wrote.

CBS Sports reported further details.

“The league is not considering placing him on the Commissioner's Exempt List because there are no formal charges and they have only just begun to review the allegations. Watson, who has previously been sued for sexual assault of varying severity, is accused of a disturbing encounter in 2020 by a woman referred to in the lawsuit as 'Jane Doe.' The lawsuit was filed by attorney Tony Buzbee, who represented some of the 25-plus women who previously accused Watson of sexual assault. Those lawsuits were settled out of court and resulted in an 11-game suspension for the quarterback during the 2022 season.”

Buzbee said, according to CBS Sports: “We are reviewing the complaint and will investigate the matter under the Rules of Conduct. We will not look to the Commissioner's Exemptions List as there are no formal charges and the league's investigation has only just begun.”

According to AP, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league is reviewing the situation.

“We will review the matter under the Code of Conduct,” said league spokesman Brian McCarthy. “We are not looking at the commissioner's exception list because there are no formal charges and the league's review has only just begun.”

The exemption list allows league commissioner Roger Goodell to grant a player paid leave while his case or circumstances are reviewed.

Watson has played in just 13 games in three seasons with the Browns. The Browns signed Watson to a five-year, $230 million contract in March 2022.
