A Philadelphia police officer has died from injuries sustained in a shooting in June

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Philadelphia police officer has died from his injuries nearly three months after being shot in the neck after stopping a vehicle while on duty, city officials said.

Police officer Jaime Roman, 31, who spent 80 days in intensive care without regaining consciousness, died Tuesday evening. Roman leaves behind a wife, 7-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son. He was with the department for nearly seven years.

In a statement released Wednesday, the police department said the driver was retrieving personal items from the vehicle in the Kensington neighborhood on June 22 when Roman noticed an empty holster on the ground.

The driver, Ramon Rodriguez Vazquez, 36, of Philadelphia, then ran away, and Roman and his partner pursued him, city police said. Rodriguez Vazquez then “turned around and fired three shots,” hitting Roman, police said.

Rodriguez Vazquez broke into a house where police arrested him.

Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said Rodriguez Vazquez will face murder charges.

Rodriguez Vazquez was previously charged on attempted murder, assault, weapons charges and other charges. George Jackson, a spokesman for the Defender Association of Philadelphia, which represents Rodriguez Vazquez, declined to comment Wednesday.

His colleagues stood outside Temple University Hospital on Tuesday evening to pay their final respects to Roman while a vehicle took his body to Philadelphia Medical Center.

Mayor Cherelle Parker vowed at a press conference on Wednesday that his death would not be allowed to be in vain and ordered the city's flags to be flown at half-mast.

At the press conference, department heads remembered Roman as a vibrant personality who could light up a room and who always wanted to be a police officer.
