Coronation Street's Sydney Martin has expressed her affection for her co-stars and revealed her own personal connection to one of the storylines.

22-year-old actress Sydney recently made her debut as Betsy Swain, the young and spirited daughter of Detective Sergeant Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers).

This week on Corrie was an emotional one as Monday's episode brought an end to this chapter of Paul Foreman's (Peter Ash) ordeal with Motor Neurone Disease following his diagnosis nearly 18 months ago.

We watched his condition steadily deteriorate during this time. First he lost his mobility and later he had difficulty speaking.

In recent weeks he has had to rely on a ventilator when he has difficulty breathing, and in Friday's episode he had to promise his brother Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) not to tell their mother Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) about a certain health problem for fear she might stop Billy from enjoying a much-needed night out with the boys.

The actress shared a picture of her fellow actors Peter, Daniel Brocklebank, Dolly-Rose Campbell, Harriet Bibby and Jane Hazlegrove in her Instagram story and wrote: “These guys deserve so much love and praise for the whole MND story.”

Sydney added some personal family photos to the post and continued: “My grandma had MND. Being diagnosed at 14 was really tough. There wasn't a lot of information easily accessible but @coronationstreet have given people a platform to learn and understand and have been really sensitive about it. The best team.”

Elsewhere, Sydney's character Betsy's problematic behavior recently led her to blackmail Carla Connor (Alison King), who took a young boy to hospital after hitting him with her car door. Betsy promised Carla that she would keep her mouth shut and prevent her from going to prison if she gave her a summer job in return – and it worked

Next, Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) deals with the consequences of her premature birth while her little boy lies in the incubator.

Unfortunately, she is interrupted by the arrival of Swain, who wants to ask Lauren some questions.

Meanwhile, Betsy reminds Joel about how he threw her out of his car in the middle of a rough neighborhood and that he owes her, which makes him angry.

When Betsy returns to Weatherfield, her new pal Mason Radcliffe (Luca Toolan) tells her about his new job at Speed Daal. He tells Betsy he's braced for trouble and later she heats things up by telling Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne) he'd better not mess with Mason as he'd have access to sharp knives in a restaurant.
