WWE will continue to expand its TV program this year – and fans can look forward to the return of “Saturday Night's Main Event.”

The cult format started in 1985 and was broadcast several times a year on late Saturday evenings on the major network NBC. At a time when the media offering was still limited, NBC's wrestling specials always received very good ratings. No wonder, since the absolute top stars of the era – such as Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage – stepped into the ring here.

SNME existed until 1992 and was republished from 2005 to 2008.

NBC specials as part of the new WWE contract

Why is the format now about to make a comeback?

A new contract between WWE and NBCUniversal will come into effect in October. This includes the broadcast rights for WWE SmackDown (which will be shown on cable TV on the USA Network on Fridays) and a quarterly TV special on the national network NBC for the next five years.

As a result, the brand name “Saturday Night's Main Event” was renewed.

The first edition is expected to air in the last quarter of 2024, probably on a Saturday in December.

More information

Does “Saturday Night’s Main Event” still work today?

Will the reboot of “Saturday Night's Main Event” be able to excite fans as much as it did in the eighties?

That will be difficult: While SNME was the place to go to see the clashes between the superstars outside of the pay-per-views (the weekly formats such as “Superstars” and “Challenge” mostly only consisted of short squash matches at the time), it will become clear that the show today can hardly distinguish itself from Raw or SmackDown.

WWE will also be required to provide mini premium live events for the four NBC nights – with matches and segments that have real meaning.

Even in 2024, a slot on NBC is associated with a lot of prestige. WWE will not be able to afford a flop with “Saturday Night's Main Event.”
