On October 21, 1990, Sayeeda was preparing for her son Kamal's 20th birthday when Kamal's father, in a drunken fit of rage, shot Sayeeda and her daughter Namrata dead and also shot Kamal. After the murders, he took his own life.

In an interview, Kamal recalled how he took his mother and sister to the hospital, not knowing that he had been shot. When doctors asked him about the blood on his shirt, he initially thought it was from his mother or sister. Only later did he learn that he was also injured. After an operation, he returned home to find that his family members had died.

In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Kamal Sadanah said, “I was shot too, a bullet went through one side of my neck and came out the other side and I survived. There is no logical reason why I should survive. It is almost as if the bullet dodged every nerve and came out the other side. There is a reason why I survived. Let me go on and find that reason, let me live well.”

He added: “I carried my mother and sister to the hospital while they were bleeding and at that point I didn't realise that I had been shot too. The hospital didn't have enough beds so my friend took me to another hospital. I just told the doctor to keep my mother and sister alive. I also tried to check on my father. When I woke up after the operation, they took me home and I saw my whole family lying dead in front of my eyes.”
