US car rental company Avis hit by serious cyber attack

The popular US car rental company Avis fell victim to a cyberattack early last month. The attack was recently confirmed by the company in a letter to affected customers.

According to the company The attack took place sometime between August 3 and 5. It was discovered on August 5. The extent of the attack is not yet known, but the company has already started working with authorities to get to the bottom of the matter.

What do we know for sure so far?

The threat actor one of Avis' business applications compromised and managed to obtain customers’ personal data from there.

According to a data breach report filed with the Iowa Attorney General late last week, the information includes customer names, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, driver's licenses, dates of birth, credit card numbers and expiration dates.

In a separate document filed with the Maine Attorney General on Monday, the company also disclosed that a total of 299,006 people have been affected (so far), while in Texas the number is 34,592.

More cases of data theft are likely to follow in the coming weeks and only then will we be able to say with certainty how many more people are affected by the data theft.
