UP gambling addict puts her wife in danger and allows friends to sexually abuse her

An incident that seems more suited to the Middle Ages than the 21st century: a man put his wife – a mother of three young children – at risk while playing with his friends and allowed them to sexually abuse her. He beat her and broke her finger when she went to her mother's house and refused to return.

The police said they had registered a case and were investigating.

The woman, a resident of Shahbad police station in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, whose identity is being kept secret by NDTV, said, “I got married in 2013. My father-in-law and husband tortured and assaulted me to get my dowry. My husband is addicted to alcohol and gambling. He lost 12 bighas (about seven acres) of land and all my jewellery in gambling and gambled me along with his friends. I protested and called the women's helpline 112, but he ran away when the police came.”

She alleged that the man allowed his friends to sexually abuse her, adding, “He did not even give me water and abused me in the presence of his friends. I went to my mother's house and on September 4, he came here with his friends, broke my finger and tried to drag me home. He tore my clothes, beat me up and his friends also did whatever they wanted with me. When our neighbours gathered, they ran away. I have three small children and I want my husband to save everything he has for them. I want action against my husband and his friends.”

“I can't even begin to tell you what they did to me. I will reveal everything in court,” she said.

Rampur police commissioner Vidyasagar Mishra said a case had been registered and investigation was underway. “She said her husband was addicted to gambling, had lost their land and used to beat her,” Mr Mishra said.
